South Dakota Population and Age Distribution. South Dakota’s estimated population was 0.8 million. The median age was 36.7 years. 24% of the population was under the age of 18, and 15% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $48,362. The total number of households was 323,765 with an average of 2.47 people.
South Dakota Employment and Unemployment Rate. 65.3% of the South Dakota population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 4th in the nation. The South Dakota unemployment rate is 4.7% which was ranked 50th in the country.
Types of South Dakota Employers. The types of employers in South Dakota were as follows: 35,299 (8.3%) were self-employed, 65,386 (15.3%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 324,368 (76.1%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five South Dakota Industries. The top five industries by percent in South Dakota were: Educational Services and Health Care (24.3%), Retail (11.2%), Manufacturing (9.4%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (9.3%), and Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing/Hunting, and Mining (7.3%).
South Dakota Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in South Dakota’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (35.2%), Sales and Office (23.5%), Service (17.4%), Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (13%), and Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (10.8%).
South Dakota Health Insurance Coverage. 89% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (12% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 72% had private coverage and 29% had public coverage.
Disability. 12% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of South Dakota reported a disability. The South Dakota disability claim rate was ranked 28th in the country.

Total Violent Crimes. South Dakota had 2,682 total violent crimes (which ranked 46th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate of 0.56% (which ranked it 6th among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 25 were murders, 585 were forcible rapes, 158 were robberies, and 1,914 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. South Dakota had 17,168 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 3,258 were burglaries, 12,845 were larceny/thefts, and 1,065 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. South Dakota had the 19th most law enforcement employees per population. South Dakota ranked 40th in the nation for the most police officers per population.
