Median Household Income. The median income of households was $43,107. The total number of households was 1,787,340 with an average of 2.57 people.
South Carolina Employment and Unemployment Rate. 53.4% of the South Carolina population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 47th in the nation. The South Carolina unemployment rate is 11.2% which was ranked 6th in the country.
Types of South Carolina Employers. The types of employers in South Carolina were as follows: 109,309 (5.4%) were self-employed, 318,230 (15.9%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 1,577,325 (78.6%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five South Carolina Industries. The top five industries by percent in South Carolina were: Educational Services and Health Care (21.4%), Manufacturing (13.8%), Retail (12%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (10.9%), and Professional/Administrative/Scientific (9.7%).
South Carolina Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in South Carolina’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (32.8%), Sales and Office (25%), Service (18.4%), Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (14.7%), and Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (9.1%).
South Carolina Health Insurance Coverage. 83% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (17% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 62% had private coverage and 34% had public coverage.
Disability. 14% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of South Carolina reported a disability. The South Carolina disability claim rate was ranked 12th in the country.

Total Violent Crimes. South Carolina had 26,397 total violent crimes (which ranked 16th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate of 0.25% (which ranked it 40th among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 324 were murders, 1,679 were forcible rapes, 4,489 were robberies, and 19,905 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. South Carolina had 180,550 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 45,086 were burglaries, 122,263 were larceny/thefts, and 13,201 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. South Carolina had the 22nd most law enforcement employees per population. South Carolina ranked 20th in the nation for the most police officers per population.
