Ohio Population and Age Distribution. Ohio’s estimated population was 11.5 million. The median age was 39.3 years. 23% of the population was under the age of 18, and 15% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $46,829. The total number of households was 4,554,672 with an average of 2.47 people.
Ohio Employment and Unemployment Rate. 57.5% of the Ohio population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 32nd in the nation. The Ohio unemployment rate is 9.1% which was ranked 21st in the country.
Types of Ohio Employers. The types of employers in Ohio were as follows: 267,645 (5.1%) were self-employed, 678,818 (12.8%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 4,331,109 (81.9%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Ohio Industries. The top five industries by percent in Ohio were: Educational Services and Health Care (24.1%), Manufacturing (15.4%), Retail (11.6%), Professional/Administrative/Scientific (9.4%), and Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (9%).
Ohio Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Ohio’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (34%), Sales and Office (24.5%), Service (18%), Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (15.8%), and Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (7.8%).
Ohio Health Insurance Coverage. 89% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (12% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 69% had private coverage and 32% had public coverage.
Disability. 14% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Ohio reported a disability. The Ohio disability claim rate was ranked 15th in the country.

Total Violent Crimes. Ohio had 34,595 total violent crimes (which ranked 10th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate of 0.30% (which ranked it 30th among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 495 were murders, 3,658 were forcible rapes, 15,235 were robberies, and 15,207 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. Ohio had 359,883 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 103,421 were burglaries, 236,950 were larceny/thefts, and 19,512 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. Ohio had the 43rd most law enforcement employees per population. Ohio ranked 33rd in the nation for the most police officers per population.
