About Delaware*
Delaware Population and Age Distribution. Delaware’s estimated population was 0.9 million. The median age was 39.2 years. 22% of the population was under the age of 18, and 15% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $58,415. The total number of households was 340,308 with an average of 2.62 people.
Delaware Employment and Unemployment Rate. 58.2% of the Delaware population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 28th in the nation. The Delaware unemployment rate is 8.8% which was ranked 23rd in the country.
Types of Employers. The types of employers in Delaware were as follows: 18,381 (4.3%) were self-employed, 64,319 (15.1%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 343,618 (80.5%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Industries. The top five industries by percent in Delaware were: Manufacturing (9.4%), Retail (12.3%), Finance, Insurance Real Estate, Rental/Leasing (9.9%), Professional/Administrative/Scientific (10.3%), and Educational Services and Health Care (23.4%).
Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Delaware’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (36.7%), Service (18.8%), Sales and Office (25.3%), Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (8.4%), and Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (10.8%).
Delaware Health Insurance Coverage. 91% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (9% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 71% had private coverage and 35% had public coverage.
Disability. 12% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Delaware reported a disability. The Delaware disability claim rate was ranked 25th in the country.

Delaware Crime Data*
Total Violent Crimes. Delaware had 5,020 total violent crimes which ranked 40th in the nation and with a violent crime rate 0.55% which ranked it 7th among all the states including DC & PR. Of the total number of violent crimes, 57 were murders, 243 were forcible rapes, 1,492 were robberies, and 3,228 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. Delaware had 30,639 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 7,371 were burglaries, 21,832 were larceny/thefts, and 1,436 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. Delaware had the 15th most law enforcement employees per population. Delaware ranked 1st in the nation for the most police officers per population.
