California Population and Age Distribution. California’s estimated population was 38 million. The median age was 35.5 years. 24% of the population was under the age of 18, and 12% was 65 years and over.
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $58,328. The total number of households was 12,552,658 with an average of 2.97 people.
California Employment and Unemployment Rate. 56.1% of the California population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 36th in the nation. The California unemployment rate is 11.4% which was ranked 3th in the country.
Types of Employers. The types of employers in California were as follows: 1,420,493 (8.5%) were self-employed, 2,323,827 (13.9%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 13,004,112 (77.5%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Industries. The top five industries by percent in California were: Educational Services and Health Care (21%), Professional/Administrative/Scientific (12.8%), Retail (11.3%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (10.1%), and Manufacturing (9.9%).
Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in California’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (36.8%), Service (19%), Sales and Office (24.1%), Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (9.1%), and Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (11.1%).
Health Insurance Coverage. 82% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (18% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 60% had private coverage and 31% had public coverage.
Disability. 10% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of California reported a disability The California disability claim rate was ranked 47th in the country.

California Crime Data*
Total Violent Crimes. California had 160,944 total violent crimes which ranked 1st in the nation and with a violent crime rate 0.42% which ranked it 17th among all the states including DC & PR. Of the total number of violent crimes, 1,884 were murders, 7,837 were forcible rapes, 5,6521 were robberies, and 94,702 were aggravated assaults.
Property Crime. California had 1,049,465 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 245,767 were burglaries, 635,090 were larceny/thefts, and 168,608 were motor vehicle thefts.
Law Enforcement. California had the 13th most law enforcement employees per population. California ranked 18th in the nation for the most police officers per population.
