About Alabama*
Alabama Population and Age Distribution. Alabama’s estimated population was 4.8 million. The median age was 38.1 years. 23% of the population was under the age of 18, and 14% was 65 years and over.
Alabama’s Age Distribution of Population:

- 25.5% ages 25 to 44
- 27.0% ages 45 to 64
- 14.0% ages 65 and over
Median Household Income. The median income of households was $41,415. The average household size was 2.5 people.
Employment and Unemployment Rate. 52% of the Alabama population over the age of 15 were employed.
Types of Employers. The types of employers in Alabama were as follows: 104,381 (5%) were self-employed, 338,799 (17%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government, and 1,534,049 (77%) were employed by the private sector.
Top Five Industries. The top five industries by percent in Alabama were: Educational Services and Health Care (22.5%), Manufacturing (13.5%), Retail (12.1%), Professional/Administrative/Scientific (9.5%), and Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (8%).
Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Alabama’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (32.9%); Service (17.2%), Sales and Office (24.6%), Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (10.2%), and Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (15.1%).
Health Insurance Coverage. 86% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (14% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 65% had private coverage and 33% had public coverage.
Disability. 16% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Alabama reported a disability.

Total Crime Rate. Alabama had a total crime rate of 459.9 incidents per 100,000 individuals.
Property Crime Rate. The property crime rate was 3,878 incidents per 100,000 individuals
Law Enforcement. Alabama had the 20th most law enforcement employees per population. Alabama ranked 23rd for the most police officers per population by state.
