Virginia Population and Age Distribution. Virginia’s estimated population was 8.2 million. The median age was 37.5 years. 23% of the population was under the age of 18, and 13% was 65 years and over.

Median Household Income. The median income of households was $61,741. The total number of households was 3,038,967 with an average of 2.61 people.

Virginia Employment and Unemployment Rate. 60.2% of the Virginia population over the age of 15 were employed which ranks 18th in the nation. The Virginia unemployment rate is 6.9% which was ranked 40th in the country.

Types of Virginia Employers. The types of employers in Virginia were as follows: 206,471 (5.2%) were self-employed, 805,644 (20.5%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 2,921,835 (74.2%) were employed by the private sector.

Top Five Virginia Industries. The top five industries by percent in Virginia were: Educational Services and Health Care (21.4%), Professional/Administrative/Scientific (14.8%), Retail (11.1%), Public Administration (9.3%), and Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (8.9%).

Virginia Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Virginia’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (41.9%), Sales and Office (23.1%), Service (16.9%), Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (9.5%), and Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (8.5%).

Virginia Health Insurance Coverage. 88% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (13% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 74% had private coverage and 25% had public coverage.

Disability. 11% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Virginia reported a disability. The Virginia disability claim rate was ranked 41st in the country.

Virginia Crime Data*

Total Violent Crimes. Virginia had 15,564 total violent crimes (which ranked 26th in the nation) and with a violent crime rate of 0.14% (which ranked it 51st among all the states including DC & PR). Of the total number of violent crimes, 314 were murders, 1,452 were forcible rapes, 4,706 were robberies, and 9,092 were aggravated assaults.

Property Crime. Virginia had 176,985 total property crimes. Of the total number of property crimes, 29,511 were burglaries, 138,398 were larceny/thefts, and 9,076 were motor vehicle thefts.

Law Enforcement. Virginia had the 32nd most law enforcement employees per population. Virginia ranked 24th in the nation for the most police officers per population.

Types of Vermont Employers. The types of employers in Vermont were as follows: 31,024 (9.5%) were self-employed, 45,645 (14%) were employed by the federal, state, or local government and 248,515 (76.2%) were employed by the private sector.

Top Five Vermont Industries. The top five industries by percent in Vermont were: Educational Services and Health Care (27.5%), Retail (11.8%), Manufacturing (10.9%), Accommodations/Food Service/Entertainment (9.2%), and Professional/Administrative/Scientific (9%).

Vermont Occupations. Occupations for the population employed (over the age of 15) in Vermont’s private sector were: Business, Science, and Arts (40.6%), Sales and Office (21.7%), Service (17.1%), Production, Transportation, and Material Moving (10.6%), and Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance (10%).

Vermont Health Insurance Coverage. 94% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had health insurance coverage (7% had no coverage). Of those with coverage, 69% had private coverage and 39% had public coverage.

Disability. 13% of the civilian non-institutionalized population of Vermont reported a disability. The Vermont disability claim rate was ranked 17th in the country.
