Affiliate members often include legal professionals, consulting firms and human resources professionals. Associate members make up the third tier of the organization membership. Associate members are typically data providers and technological professionals.

The NAPBS seeks to accomplish certain goals throughout the year, as this organization works to promote compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act and continued ethical business practices. This organization also works to keep the public informed about the importance of background check services and technologies, and promotes awareness of privacy rights, security issues and consumer protection. Finally, this organization seeks to have a presence in Washington, D.C. and state governments in order to advocate for the importance of responsible employment background check practices.
